Cadmium is now free and open source

We are releasing the Cadmium application, models, and related code under the Apache 2.0 license. Developers and studios can use Cadmium freely, modify it for their own workflows, integrate the models into other tools such as Blender, TVPaint, and Toon Boom Harmony, and contribute improvements directly on GitHub.

Alongside the open source release, we are introducing a new version of Cadmium that runs entirely on your own computer. It includes the same core features as the hosted version, and on Apple silicon Macs and Windows machines with supported GPUs it is faster than processing through our hosted servers. Running locally also means:

  • Cadmium is free to use.
  • Your artwork is never uploaded to our servers.
  • The app works offline and in air-gapped production environments.
  • Studios and developers can customize the software for their own pipelines.

Transitioning to the new version

The hosted version of Cadmium will remain available until November 1, 2026.

Existing Pro subscriptions will be cancelled automatically on November 1, 2026. Existing users will continue to have access to the hosted app until the shutdown date, and can begin moving to the local version at any time.

What’s next

As part of this transition, we are winding down Latent Space Labs, the business entity that formally operated Cadmium. The Cadmium intellectual property stays with us, and we will keep maintaining the project independently. This does not affect the Apache 2.0 license or your ability to use, modify, distribute, or integrate the open-source release.

We plan to keep improving the core Cadmium features: improving colorization accuracy and gap closing performance.
